Before I became a top-producing Realtor here in Sylva, I spent a good portion of my life in the restaurant business. So, I'd like to think I've developed a reasonably well-trained culinary instinct for recognizing the difference between a good pizza...and a truly great pizza.
And frankly, I couldn't think of a better time to share this little mountain pizza adventure.
Because, ladies and gentlemen...
It's football season.
And if you're anything like me, you already understand that some things in life were simply meant to be together.
Peanut butter and jelly.
Biscuits and gravy.
Mountains and sunsets.
And then there is that glorious marriage made somewhere up in culinary heaven:
Football. Pizza. Beer.
Now come on...
You know I'm right.
Yeah...
I'm definitely right.
So loosen your belt one notch, bring your appetite, and let's take a little journey through some of the mountain communities serving pizza worthy of the occasion.
Because there are some questions in life that deserve careful consideration.
Where should you live?
Which mountain road offers the prettiest view?
And perhaps most importantly...
Where do you find the best pizza in the mountains?
Now, I understand that asking folks around Western North Carolina to agree on the “best” pizza is a little like asking five grandmothers to agree on the proper way to make biscuits.
It simply isn't going to happen.
And honestly...
That's part of the fun.
From the charming streets of Sylva to the university town of Cullowhee and the historic village of Dillsboro, Western North Carolina has quietly assembled a collection of pizza joints that can stand proudly alongside restaurants in much larger cities.
These aren't cookie-cutter pizzas sliding out of a cardboard box somewhere along the interstate.
These are places with stories.
Places with history.
Places where flour, fire, family recipes, fresh ingredients, cold beer, and just enough culinary imagination come together to create something worth writing home about.

Speedy's Pizza Pub has a passport.

Meatballs Pizzeria — The Legend of a Wild Italian Woman
Every great town deserves a legend.
Sylva has Karen Martar.
The story begins with a family meatball recipe, a wild Italian woman from New York, and a mountain town that probably had no idea what was about to happen.
In 1983, Karen Martar arrived in Sylva and opened the wonderfully named Meatballs.
For the next 17 years, her restaurant became more than simply a place to eat.
It became part of the heartbeat of Main Street.
She served delicious pizza and the famous meatballs she had learned to make from her family—but somewhere along the way, she created something much larger than a restaurant.
She created community.
In fact, having your photograph displayed on the wall at Meatballs became something of a local badge of honor—one of those treasured little distinctions that told the world:
“Yes, sir. I belong here.”
But Karen's legacy extended far beyond the kitchen.
She volunteered countless hours to make Sylva a better place. She served as a Guardian ad Litem protecting neglected and abused children, raised money to care for abandoned animals through ARF, and served on the town's zoning board when Sylva needed passionate and reasonable voices helping guide its future.
When Karen passed away in 2007, her loss was felt throughout the community.
Today, her daughter, Crystal Pace, along with her husband, Chef Santiago Guzzetti, is carrying that remarkable legacy forward.
The flame has been relit.
From wood-fired pizza pies to the beloved family meatball recipe, Meatballs has returned to Main Street with the same essential ingredients that made the original so special:
Good food. Good people. And a whole lot of heart.
And frankly...
That's a recipe worth preserving.
Mad Batter Kitchen — Pizza in a Theater? Now That's Entertainment.
If Walt Disney had wandered into a historic mountain theater and decided it needed hand-tossed pizza, local brews, homemade desserts, and live jazz...
He might have dreamed up something resembling the Mad Batter Kitchen.
Located inside Sylva's historic Lyric Theater, the Mad Batter is one of those places where dinner comes with a little extra personality.
This family-friendly restaurant has been locally owned for nearly three decades and specializes in fresh, scratch-made food served in a casual and lively setting.
The menu is broad enough to make even the most indecisive member of your family nervous.
Hand-tossed pizzas.
Grass-fed burgers.
Wings.
Sandwiches.
Rice bowls.
Soups.
Salads.
Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options.
And homemade ice cream and desserts for those who believe—quite correctly—that dinner isn't truly finished until something sweet arrives.
The Mad Batter also offers vegan pizza options, proving that pizza is one of those rare diplomatic foods capable of bringing nearly everybody to the table.
And then there's the setting.
Movies.
Live jazz.
A historic theater.
A large outdoor patio.
Fresh bread baked daily.
Honestly, if your evening isn't going particularly well, the Mad Batter offers enough possibilities to turn the whole thing around.

Now, if we're talking about Football. Pizza. Beer., it would be downright irresponsible not to make a stop in Cullowhee.
Because sitting just a short walk from Western Carolina University—and close enough to the action to hear the roar when the Catamount faithful get excited—is Peak Pizza Bar.
And this particular pizza joint is a little different from the others on our mountain pizza tour.
Peak Pizza Bar understands something important about football season.
Sometimes you don't need a white tablecloth.
Sometimes you don't need a reservation.
And sometimes, what you really need is a great New York-style pizza, a plate of jumbo wings, a cold beer, and a place to settle in with your friends before—or after—the game.
And Peak seems to have figured that part out quite nicely.
Located on Old Cullowhee Road, Peak Pizza Bar has become one of those natural gathering places where students, locals, visitors, and outdoor adventurers all seem to find a seat at the table.

Located on Depot Street, this pizza spot has become a welcome addition to one of Western North Carolina's most charming small towns.
The philosophy here is refreshingly straightforward:
Scratch-made pizza. Crispy wings. Fresh salads. Cold draft beer. Wine.
Now that's what I call an efficient business plan.
Depot Pizza offers a place to sit down and enjoy your meal—or grab it and take it along on your next mountain adventure.
But pizza isn't the only thing rolling through this depot.
The lunch menu includes hearty and creative salads with names like The Country Chick, Silk Road Express, and Hail Caesar.
You'll find ingredients such as candied pecans, goat cheese, and Asian blood orange chicken—proof that sometimes even a pizza restaurant understands that a fellow occasionally needs to pretend he's eating healthy.
For those curious about authentic Italian flavors or looking for gluten-free options, Depot Pizza has become a place worth exploring.
And with Dillsboro's historic charm right outside the door, it makes for a particularly good excuse to spend an afternoon wandering the town.
Because sometimes the best journeys involve no luggage whatsoever.

Quirky Birds Bistro — Where Pizza Gets a Little More Interesting
Now, every great pizza adventure needs at least one stop that refuses to behave like everybody else.
And down in the charming mountain village of Dillsboro, Quirky Birds Bistro appears to have happily accepted that responsibility.
The name alone ought to tell you something.
This is not your ordinary pizza joint.
No sir.
Quirky Birds is a full bar and bistro with a soulful flair, a cozy atmosphere, and just enough personality to make you wonder what might happen next.
And that's precisely the point.
Located on Front Street in Dillsboro, Quirky Birds brings together good food, favorite spirits, live music, indoor and outdoor dining, and an atmosphere that feels less like a typical restaurant and more like somebody decided to throw a party and invite the whole mountain.
And apparently...
The fur babies are invited, too.
Because Quirky Birds is family-friendly in every sense of the word—including the four-legged members of the family who occasionally believe they own the place.
The kitchen is shared with Front Street Takeout, which means visitors can enjoy many of their favorite dishes alongside a properly selected beverage from the full bar.
Now that's what I call teamwork.
The menu is filled with made-to-order selections, including sandwiches, wraps, black bean burgers, salads, vegan options, and healthier alternatives for those moments when you've convinced yourself you're going to eat responsibly.
But don't worry.
Pizza is still on the menu.
You can order a custom 9-inch pizza when you're feeling sensible...
Or step things up to an 18-inch pizza when the evening requires a little more ambition.
And sometimes...
An evening simply requires more pizza.
Quirky Birds also brings live music into the mix, creating a vibrant atmosphere in one of Western North Carolina's most charming little mountain villages.
